Grades & Grade Point Average

The letters A, B, C, D, S (satisfactory), and CR (credit) are used to indicate passing work. The letters F and U (unsatisfactory) and NC (no credit) indicate that the quality of work was such that, to obtain credit, the student must repeat the regular work of the course. P (progress) represents satisfactory progress, an interim grade pending completion of a subsequent term’s course work.

NOTE: there are four types of GPA used depending on the determination needed:

  • KU GPA: all KU attempted A-F hours – a 2.0 is required for graduation.
  • KU + Transfer: GPA of all hours taken at KU and transferred to KU.
  • Major KU Junior/Senior GPA: junior/senior level major hours taken at KU used for certifying graduation with the major – a 2.0 is required for graduation.
  • Minor KU GPA and Certificate KU GPA: minor or certificate hours taken at KU used for certifying completion of the minor or certificate – a 2.0 is required to earn the minor or certificate.

For additional Grade Point Average calculations, please use the GPA Calculator.

Grades of W/WP/WF (withdrawn), I (incomplete), P (progress), S (satisfactory), U (unsatisfactory), CR (credit), and NC (no credit) are not figured in the GPA. To calculate the GPA, add the grades points earned and divide that total by the number of hours attempted, those that are graded A, B, C, D, or F.
